ADULT LITERACY


Literacy

HRSDC has defined Literacy as: 

"The ability to understand and employ printed information in daily activities at home, at work and in the community - to achieve one's goals, and to develop one's knowledge and potential."


 

Essential Skills

HRSDC has defined Essential Skills as:

"Essential Skills are the skills needed for work, learning and life. They provide the foundation for learning all other skills and enable people to evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change."

The Government of Canada as well as other national and international agencies have identified and validated the nine essential skills listed below.

  • Numerical Calculation

    • Money Math

    • Scheduling or Budgeting and Accounting Math

    • Measurement and Calculation Math

    • Data Analysis Math

  • Numerical Estimation

  5. Thinking Skills

  • Problem Solving

  • Decision Making

  • Critical Thinking

  • Job Task Planning and Organizing

  • Significant Use of Memory

  1. Computer Use

In 2005 Statistics Canada released the results of the International Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey (2003).  It was revealed that 42% of Ontarians do not have the essential skills needed to keep up with the demands of our society and economy.
