Literacy Council of Brantford and District Sixth Annual Corporate Spelling Bee Wednesday, February 27, 2008
Participant Rules
1. Each team will consist of three (3) members.
2. Each team will designate one (1) person as Team Leader. The Team Leader will be the official spokesperson for the team.
3. Each team will be provided with one study guide. This is not a guarantee that all words used in the bee will come from this guide.
4. Teams will be called upon to spell according to the number they draw upon arriving at the bee.
5. Teams will place (i.e. 3rd, 4th, 5th) in the order they are eliminated.
6. The pronouncer will say a word, use it in a sentence, and repeat the word again. (After the pronouncer has given a word, it is recommended that the designated speller pronounce the word BEFORE and AFTER spelling it.)
JUDGES NOTE: The judges may not disqualify a contestant for failing to pronounce a word either before or after spelling it.
7. The judges will allow a word to be pronounced up to three (3) times to assure that the word is reasonably clear to the contestants.
8. Team members may request only once that the pronouncer give a definition of a word.
9. Team members may confer on the spelling of a word (paper & pencils are provided). The team leader must begin spelling within 30 seconds.
10. Until a team starts spelling a word, they have the right to use a *MULLIGAN* - a free pass – without penalty or disqualification. When a team declares that a Mulligan will be used, they will be presented with a new word to spell, and the process will start anew. Mulligans are limited to three per team to be used anytime during the contest except in the final round. Mulligans must be bought and paid for prior to the beginning of the competition.
NOTE: A Mulligan does not give a team the right not to spell a word during any given round – it just allows the team to change the selected word.
11. Upon missing the spelling of a word, the team is immediately eliminated. The word will be spelled correctly by the pronouncer for the audience and participants.
12. The Final Rounds – when the teams are reduced to two, the elimination procedure changes slightly. At this point, when one team misspells a word, the other team must spell their own given word correctly in order to be declared the winner. If both teams correctly spell their given words, a new round with new words will start. If both teams misspell their given word, a new round, with new words will start.
